History

Del discovered sizzler and Helen Johnson in Culver City, California, as Del’s Sizzler Family Steak House. They aimed to create an economical steakhouse — a fast-food chain that gives a restaurant feel and affordable prices. The menu was simple and consisted of two different steaks, bread rolls and a side salad.

Within the 1960s, the chain expanded within the Los Angeles area to include a few more restaurants. Also, the self-service concept became the ‘Sizzler Service’ image, a combination between table service and self-service. However, throughout the 1970s, the restaurant’s concept leaked and competing restaurants with the casual-dining experience began offering a similar menu.

Pressure from competitors made the chain start offering a full buffet throughout the 1980s rather than just a salad bar. Foods included in the salad bar option were all-you-can-eat shrimp, hot appetisers, soups, and various desserts. Unfortunately, this brought a drawback to sales of other menu items as patrons began selecting just the all-you-can-eat option.

In recent years, Sizzler has continued to improve its dining style and services to meet the needs of its patrons. As a result, it is still one of the best casual dining providers in the country, offering good value for its food. Currently, it has also started meeting the Healthy Dining requirements for nearly 20 of its menu items.

The chain offers a variety of steaks, hamburgers and seafood ranging between $10 and $20. The value menu includes both an entree and an endless salad bar plate — it is slightly more affordable with their most expensive item that cost about $16. The seafood items, including shrimp skewers, fresh salmon and unlimited shrimp, go for $14 or less.

With their various lunch and dinner options, Sizzler offers a variety of affordable meals which cater to a range of different tastes. In addition, their Healthy Dining option — such as the petite 6 oz or the fresh grilled salmon. Tri-tip — are also an affordable way to enjoy a delicious meal.

The service at the different stores is generally good and the waiters and waitresses are friendly and helpful. Overall, the salad buffet’s most popular item, though some customers are displeased that the salad bar no longer includes chicken wings and shrimp. However, the steaks on the menu are seen as much better quality than before.

Lastly, the interior of the restaurant is simplistic and pleasant. On the whole, it is well-kept and clean. However, some stores have not refurbished their interior in recent years and some customers feel that the ambience could be remodelled.
