Krispy Kreme Doughnuts were founded in 1937 by Vernon Rudolph. The original location was in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, but the business eventually expanded across the United States.
Vernon would periodically remove the copyrighted “K” from the business name and create a new business model each time. While this practice sounds complicated and bizarre to us today, it wasn’t uncommon at the time.
Even though the name was constantly changing, the quality remained the same. So it wasn’t long until Vernon got married and began selling the doughnuts to his wife, Vernice.
The business soon became a public company, and Vernon ran the show in the office. Over the years, Krispy Kreme grew to over 60 locations in 25 states by the 1980s.

What’s the most popular item on their menu?
With the vast range of doughnuts and different types of toppings to choose from, it can be a difficult decision to decide which one to get once you’re there.
So it may be worthwhile to know which doughnuts are already the most popular among other Aussies – it saves you from picking the ones that aren’t so good.
As you may have guessed, the Original Glazed doughnuts are, by far, the most popular doughnut on their menu. Coming in at the lowest price as well – it’s certainly a winner.
You could walk away with one today for just $2.50 at your local Krispy Kreme store.
Next of the top-rated is their Choc Iced Sprinkles. It’s the Original Glazed, topped in a coating of delicious chocolate, then covered in sprinkles. Yum.
Coming in at a solid third place is the Kookies & Kreme variety. Covered in a glaze, dipped in a white chocolate truffle icing, topped with some of the finest chocolate biscuit crumbs, and finished with a light white chocolate truffle drizzle.
