History

Rocky Aoki founded benihana in 1954. He then moved to the U.S. from Tokyo, Japan, after graduating from college with the dream of opening his restaurant. Like most successful business people, his story has a humble beginning as he started at the road of Harlem selling ice cream daily as he helped himself at the night school for restaurant management through the year.

His creative idea of serving his treats topped with brilliantly colored Japanese umbrellas helped his little ice cream stand expand, and soon he was able to save up a substantial amount coupled with a loan he acquired, opened the first branch of the restaurants.

Aoki opened the restaurant in America’s premier teppanyaki in New York City’s West 59th street in 1964. He named it Benihanas after his parent’s coffee shop in Tokyo, which inspired him to go into business in the first place.

His top-class chefs would prepare authentic Japanese-style cuisine in front of customers seated at tables around a steel grill, featuring the interior of a quaint and real-life Japanese farmhouse. Customers were blown away by the highly skilled chefs’ impressive theatrical knife skills, and he got fantastic reviews from legendary attackers.

He was able to pay off the loans he got from the bank. He had made a lot of profit six months after opening.

Today there are over 70 locations worldwide boasting over 100 million meals served since its tiny beginnings of selling ice cream on the street of Harlem.

The chain remains the largest Teppanyaki franchise and has more than 7,400 workers worldwide, with about 15 franchises. The opening of the 100th store was celebrated in 2007.

Review

Benihana remains the leader in the fast-food industry until now that the competition in the food industry is high and other teppanyaki restaurants are open worldwide. They give a selection of authentic Japanese sake and an extensive menu of other alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages.

In addition, they have various options ranging from appetizers to a wide variety of hand-made special sushi rolls then the hibachi menu that can be ordered from steak to seafood to chicken.

They also offer an extended lounge menu in case of customers prefer a more quiet and exotic setting.

Their culinarian is well known for their top qualified knife mastery and exhibits a display that won’t fade away in your memory.

The quiet but exotic aura makes you feel like you have instantly transported to Tokyo while still giving you that homey, relaxing vibe so you can enjoy your meal.

The prices are less high, and you get a lot of value for your money. The average appetizer ranges around $8. The Teppan entrees average around $20 but include five to six courses with items such as soup, hot tea, soup, salad, hibachi shrimp appetizer, hibachi vegetables, homemade dipping sauces, and steamed rice as well as your well-proportioned entree.

The lounge specials range around $20 and include menu selections ranging from fish tacos to filet mignon. The Teppan and Lounge menus offer affordable lunch menus with an average selection ranging from $9-$15.

As with any popular restaurant on the weekend, there may be a little bit of a wait. Most locations have more than adequate seating, so the wait time is average, but the dinner show is well worth the wait once you are seated.

They are well known for their excellent hygiene, vast menu selection, highly skilled and talented chefs, friendly staff, and welcoming environment.
